Planning a Service of Remembrance

There’s no one, right way to plan a funeral, memorial, or celebration of life service. We believe that each service of remembrance should be as unique and memorable as the life it honors.

If your loved one provided you with their preferences for their service, please honor their requests to the best of your ability.

Here is a checklist for preparations as you plan a Service of Remembrance

  • Location for the service. Will it be held at Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel, your church, or another favorite venue?
  • Who will officiate the service?
  • Will you have a viewing and/or open or closed casket during the funeral service?
  • Will your service adhere to traditions of a faith or culture?
  • Select flowers, including a floral spray for the casket.
  • Decide where to send memorial contributions
  • Select music
  • Arrange transportation. Will the family rent a limousine?
  • Will there be a motorcycle escort for the procession to the cemetery?
  • Select clothing and jewelry for the deceased
  • Decide which newspapers to place announcement in
  • Prepare information for the obituary
  • Decide who will write and deliver the eulogy
  • Select readings, scripture, or poems to include in the folder or share during the service
  • Locate special photographs or other memorabilia to display
  • Decide if you want the decor and center pieces to reflect a favorite hobby or interest of your loved one, such as fishing, gardening or music
  • Make arrangements for the reception at Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel or another location. Decide on the type of food to be served
  • If not already decided, make arrangements for the final resting place of the deceased
