18 February 2011

Margaret, “Maggie” Smith, born October 15, 1947 in Lawrence Massachusetts, passed away on February 8 in Auburn as a result of complications following surgery.  Ms. Smith was a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, and in 2002 received her Master’s Degree in Accounting from Golden Gate University.  Maggie was a Partner with Jennifer Jensen in the accounting firm of Jensen Smith, Certified Public Accountants, Lincoln’s “Small Business of the Year” in 2006 and consistently recognized by the Lincoln public as “Best of the Best for CPA’s.”  As an accounting professional, Maggie was an active leader in the profession, training and mentoring other professionals for many years.  She was also active in the community, and her volunteer commitment was recognized in 1991, when Maggie was nominated for the President’s Volunteer Action Award, being recognized as one of President George Bush’s “1000 Points of Light.”  A significant part of her local volunteerism was focused on her role as an active member and leader in the Lincoln Chapter of Kiwanis International where she served as the club’s first female president in 2006.  Under Maggie’s leadership, the Chapter was recognized by Kiwanis International as one of its “Distinguished Clubs,” and Maggie was instrumental in the establishment of the Club’s Bringing up Grades (BUG) program which is designed to help third-grade students improve their reading skills. She was also active in Soroptimist International and the United Way, and served on numerous boards and volunteer committees.

Maggie was a remarkable person who was loved and respected by her family and all who knew her in the community of Lincoln and in Placer, Nevada and Sutter Counties.  She is survived by her son Matthew, her twin brother Bill Russell, sister-in-law Nancy Russell, nephews Gregory and Andrew Russell, and former husband Michael Smith.  She will be dearly missed by all.

An event to celebrate the memory of Maggie will be held at 4:00 pm, Sunday, February 27 at the Lincoln Hills Community Church, 950 East Joiner Parkway, Lincoln.  For those that may wish to send flowers, the family suggests instead that donations be made on Maggie Smith’s behalf to the Lincoln Kiwanis Foundation, P.O. Box 1094, Lincoln, CA 95648.
