FAQs about Burial

Is embalming really necessary?

Except in certain special cases, embalming is not required by law.  Embalming may be necessary, however, if you select certain funeral arrangements, such as a funeral with a viewing.  If you do not want embalming, you usually have the right to choose an arrangement that does not require you to pay for it, such as direct cremation or immediate burial.

Embalming is always necessary when shipping the deceased over state lines or internationally.

Our charge for embalming includes bathing, dressing and casketing of the deceased, as well as basic hairstyling (special hairstyles not included).

Why do people have a viewing?

A viewing is helpful for those who need to see their loved one more time before their final farewell.  If a family member or close friends has not been with the deceased for quite some time, a viewing can be especially comfortable.

We have two types of viewings.

A short viewing for up to 10 people for 45 minutes or less.  Embalming is usually not required for a viewing of this type.

A longer viewing for up to 3 hours provides family members and friends to view the deceased over a span of time to allow individuals to have a moment with the deceased for their opportunity to say their final farewell.  The longer viewing can be held the evening prior to a funeral or memorial service or just prior to the service.

Is a Funeral or Memorial Service Really That Important?

A funeral or memorial service, also referred to as a “Celebration of Life” or “service of remembrance,” is an opportunity for family and friends to come together to honor their departed loved one. This is very important in allowing people to have a healthy start to their grieving process.  We can assist you with designing a wonderful service for your loved one that will reflect their personality, interests and accomplishments. Our versatile facility and convenient catering services will provide you with a beautiful setting and the worry-free convenience you need.

How long should we plan for the services to be?

A typical Funeral or Memorial service is around 1 to 1-1/2 hours long.  If you add a reception or meal at the location, you should plan an additional 2 hours.  If you are planning to use a rented facility, you will want to keep in mind their cost for rental charges.

A graveside or niche-side service is usually no longer than 30 to 45 minutes long. The exception to this is a National Cemetery Committal where every family is allowed no more than 25 minutes from the time we arrive at the shelter where the service is to take place. This includes time for Honors for a Veteran. The National Cemeteries maintain a strict schedule due to the number of committal services that are conducted each day.

If your loved one will be laid to rest at a National Cemetery, you may want to consider a gathering after the Committal to allow people more time to share their memories in a more relaxed setting. Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel is available as an option. Catering can be arranged to take this added responsibility off your shoulders and give you the opportunity to give your full attention to the Committal.

What’s the difference between an Eternal Tribute Website and a tribute video with pictures and music?

The Eternal Tribute Website is an on-line remembrance.  The tribute video with pictures and music is produced from the Eternal Tribute Website and is provided for your funeral, memorial, or celebration-of-life service.  This feature is included in some of the arrangement packages we offer. If you did not purchase a package that includes the Eternal Tribute Website, you can purchase it separately.

Our offer includes up to 60 pictures for a tribute video. You can specify the order of the pictures or we will choose the order for you. Your digital photos in jpg format need to be uploaded or brought to us on a flash drive at least two full days prior to the service to allow sufficient time to prepare your video. DVDs of the video presentation can be purchased at an additional cost.  Due to time constraints, we are unable to scan your printed photos into a digital format.  There are local services that can do this for you.

Can you recommend a florist that we can rely on?

There are many florists in the Rocklin/Roseville area that provide beautiful flowers and quality service.  However, we have found Rocklin Florist among those that our families are very pleased with.  Please have flowers delivered at least an hour before the service.  Rocklin Florist, 5885 Pacific Street, Rocklin CA 95677, (916) 624-1651.

What do I need to do to make arrangements at a local cemetery?

If you have chosen a public or private cemetery (not a National Cemetery), you must contact them to make arrangements for burial or interment of cremated remains. The Interment Order needs to be signed two full days prior to the interment. The cemetery will not begin the opening of a grave unless this order has been signed and all fees are paid.  This is not the responsibility of Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel, but your Funeral Director will need to confirm with you in advance that this very important matter has been taken care of.

Does the Graveside Service always take place after the Funeral?

Many people choose to have the graveside service first.  Then they are free to celebrate the life of their loved one at a memorial service without the casket being present. For that reason, some people feel that a memorial celebration of life provides a more uplifting time to remember the life of the loved one. However, in planning a funeral where the casket is present, as happy memories are shared, people often are able look past their sadness  and enjoy the time of thoughtful reflection.  Both options are acceptable.

Are there special considerations for Veterans?

Upon request, we will notify the Veterans Administration of your loved one’s death. The purchase of an additional death certificate is required for this service.

Burial at a National Cemetery is at no charge for Veterans or their spouse.  Most Veteran’s families in our area choose the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.  We will make arrangements with the National Cemetery for placement, as well as for military honors to take place at the time of the committal service. Information about National Cemeteries in California.

If you choose to have your loved one placed at a local cemetery rather than a National Cemetery, a grave or niche marker will be provided by the U.S. Armed Forces or you can choose to purchase a marker that meets the specifications of the cemetery you have selected.
